Community at the Crossroads: 1795-Present
At the heart of every early-American tavern was community, and Community at the Crossroads reimagines the second-floor exhibit space at Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum as a vibrant gathering place of stories, people, and shared experiences. This refreshed exhibit explores how the tavern served not only travelers and merchants, but also local residents seeking news, entertainment, political discussion, and connection. Through period objects, interpretive displays, and immersive storytelling, visitors will encounter the diverse individuals who passed through the tavern’s doors during the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibit highlights themes of commerce, hospitality, social exchange, and daily life, demonstrating how taverns functioned as essential hubs within early American communities. By centering the human stories behind the building, Community at the Crossroads invites guests to see the tavern not simply as a historic structure, but as a living reflection of the people who shaped Rahway’s past. This exhibit refresh aims to create a more engaging and accessible visitor experience while deepening public understanding of the tavern’s enduring role in local history.
